WE’RE NOT PUTTING YOU ON EUGENE!
Between the birthers, daily racism and xenophobia that pollutes the discourse in our great nation, I was thinking that the phrase “the inmates are running the asylum” defines the present situation best. However, it seems to obvious so I thought about what the late and brilliant play writer, Eugene Ionesco would be thinking if he were alive today. Mr Ionesco was one the brilliant writers of The Theater of the Absurd which was a best seller and was one of Broadway’s funniest plays historically when it first premiered in 1961. In a nutshell, the play focused on a culture that as “characters caught in hopeless situations forced to do repetitive or meaningless actions; dialogue full of cliches, wordplay, and nonsense; plots that are cyclical or absurdly expansive; either a parody or a dismissal of realism”. Ah, Yes, “a dismissal of realism” comes to mind when I watch the you tube at the town hall meeting in Delaware. Congressman Mike Castle, an honorable man and public servant looked horrified when a woman, who resembled the late Magna Goebells bellowed her vile accusation that Barack Obama is not an American citizen. This claim is supported as of this writing by nine members of Congress and of course America’s Racist of the airwaves, Rush Limbaugh and other advocates of hate.
Mr Ionesco if alive today would have to be thinking, “I was joking, its only a play”. But alas, this in not a joke. Apparently, the more solid evidence that is revealed, (oh something like the birth certificate), the more convinced the birthers become that they are correct. I am convinced that if there was film of Barack Obama’ birth in Honolulu, that these looney tunes would have a response refuting the evidence. Mr. Ionesco may be sad to know that his play is now a major part of our culture. To this fringe crowd, facts and critical thought is considered Un American.
